Air Raid Precautions Dorman Long & Co. September 1938

Redcar WW2 air raid precautions photograph album

This lovely and exceedingly scarce 1938 album of photographs shows the pre-World War 2 air-raid precautions carried out by Dorman Long & Company of Redcar in the Redcar and Cleveland area.

Tied with a silk cord and measuring 8 x 6 inches (21 x 15 cms), the album contains 15 laid-down original photographs and is in immaculate condition, virtually as made in 1938.

During the build up to the Second World War, and particularly in the light of the 1937 German bombing of Guernica, Spain, the British government revised their estimate that bombing casualties across the country in the forthcoming hostilities would quickly exceed a million.

Many companies and local organisations across the country became involved in preparing defences against the anticipated wide-ranging air-raids - these precautions nowadays remain largely unrecorded and undocumented.

This Dorman Long Redcar album is a rare and evocative survival of the type of measures that were being taken.
